November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This month of awareness is dedicated to sharing important information about the disease and highlighting stories of patients, survivors, and their families. Every year research and advocacy organizations unite to raise awareness and educate the public about risk factors, causes, and treatments for lung cancer, which effects over 220,000 Americans each year.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the US and the second most commonly diagnosed form of cancer. Surprisingly, many people who have never smoked cigarettes are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. The threat of this disease is very serious for adults in the US. This is why it is so important for people to gain awareness and an understanding of lung cancer. Adults need to take a proactive approach to their respiratory health. Lung cancer awareness month is all about sharing information in the hopes of protecting the health and well-being of patients and their loved ones.

A diagnosis of this nature creates panic and stress in the patient and their family members. Lung cancer is a very stressful disease.  Unpleasant emotions, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors such as panic arise while navigating through a diagnosis such as this. If one’s mental health begins to interfere with their quality of life, seeking professional help may be a good option. Common mental health conditions in lung cancer patients that evolve from distress consist of panic, anxiety and depression.

Through research, funding, early detection and continued awareness of this disease, many patients are given new hope. There may be many challenges that come with lung cancer, but with the right tools, support, and resources, one can continue to live their life.
